Llyn Idwal

The Lake

Coxe regards this as being a “sinister bird-less lake”. Although he does not state as to why it was included in his book. However, the lake is named after Prince Idwal Foel, one of the ancient Kings of Wales. According to legend, the king's unfortunate offspring was murdered by being drowned in the lake. In fact Idwal Foel died in battle against the Saxons in 942 and an alternate version claims that he was cremated beside the lake, as was the burial custom for Celtic nobility. Perhaps this is the reason for the negative atmosphere.
